Representation

  1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? Representation is an important concept in media as it allows people to explore their identities freely without needing to conform to any stereotypes depicted in a particular show or movie. Its also helpful in increasing self esteem for people of marginalised groups (especially youth). Interpersonal exposure through media representation can assist in reducing stereotypes of underrepresented groups. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? There are two different sets of images of the Duchess, in this case the photographer, picture editor and news editor are its gatekeepers.  attempts can be made to shape and control the image, depending on the nature of the story, and the news agenda at the time. This allows the image of the Royal Family to be improved depending on how the image was taken. 3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representati

INDUSTRIES- REGULATION

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated? Rules and regulations are set in place to ensure that companies/organisations operate in a fair manner. Regulations - in short - are a system of rules made and maintained by an authority such as the government. 2) What is OFCOM responsible for? Ofcom  is responsible for regulating a certain sector of the media industry, which is TV and Radio. 3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why? 1. privacy as everyone's information and data should remain disclosed to the public.. 2. Religion as there shouldn't be any false or negative information spread about someones faith because it could lead to discrimination and generalisation. 4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why? Not at all because Channel 4's primary age demographic is 16 t

narrative blog task

Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  The movie Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Parks and Box: 2005) is a great example of Todorov's narrative structure of  equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.   A  problem  is repeatedly occurring from Wallace and Gromit are catching rabbits and further makes  complications  continuously until Gromit realises Wallace has turned into a man-rabbit because of the mind control device. This therefore creates an  exposition  and an on going cycle until Gromit battles to save Wallace before it is too late and this provides the  climax  to the film as a result creating a  new equilibrium  at the the end of the movie. Imagine you are planning the opening shot of a film or TV programme. 1. How could you show that the scene was taking place early in the morning?  You can show that the scene is talking place early in the morning b

Audience Theory 2

Theory questions and your opinion 1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society   I think the media is partially  responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence especially in young children and teens as there are harmful things on the internet that they could be exposed to due to the lack of regulation. However, the media is also used to excuse the actions of people and often dismiss the fact that people have free will and can act on their own impulses. A person's actions could also be a result of their experiences and not the media. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. Social learning theory is still relevant in the digital age as there has been an increase in  influencers online. Some say young people are very impressionable and feel the need to fit in. Therefore they will mimic the appearance of influencers onli
