Introduction to feminism

 Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
She started the everyday sexism project to help give women an outlet to speak up.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
The everyday project links to the concept of post-feminism as it raises awareness while also offers those who are affect a platform to speak up and share their experiences. I think feminism is still required in western society as their is still injustice between men and women but also feminism should be more inclusive to the struggles of marginalised groups such as black women who have to overcome different struggles than other women in society.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
The accessibility of the everyday sexism project makes it easier for people to feel more comfortable sharing their experiences as its not face to face but they are still being seen and heard.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
I think there will be a point in the future when the everyday sexism project is not required because society will reform.
I think the future of feminism will be more inclusive to women of marginalised groups as it has been serving white women since the suffragette movement and the struggles of black women have been ignored despite gender and race falling hand in hand. It has come to the point that the natural state of a black women's hair is deemed "unprofessional" and unkept in society. Hopefully, in the future, feminists will accept that the "free the nipple" movement doesn't apply to everyone and accept that by choosing to cover up doesn't indicate that  Muslim women are oppressed and are in the shackles of men.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
Networked feminism aims to tackle social inequalities.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
first wave- the suffragette movement - early 20th century when women campaigned for the right to vote
second wave- campaigning for reproductive rights 1960's- 80's
third wave- women receiving more employment opportunities and started reclaiming femininity 1990's
fourth wave- campaigning and activism done via social media

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
heforshe
This project focuses on the idea of having gender equality for men as well as women.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
